Education Through Every Challenge
What We Do
When a child is fighting cancer or another life-threatening illness, school can be the anchor that restores normalcy, confidence, and hope. Together with Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation (NVCCF), the Brett Torino Foundation funds comprehensive K–12 education services so students can keep learning—during treatment, recovery, and their return to the classroom.

How It Works
- Individualized Learning Plans: Coordinated with families, medical teams, and Clark County School District (CCSD) to align with each student’s current curriculum and health needs.
- Licensed Educators + Trained Volunteers: Instruction adapts to energy levels, treatment schedules, and infection-control guidelines.
- Advocacy: NVCCF staff attend school meetings (504/IEP/private conferences), recommend accommodations, and help educators understand medical, social, and emotional needs.

Programs We Fund
- In-Patient Services (Summerlin Hospital): Bedside tutoring and on-unit learning so school continues during hospitalization.
- Brett Torino Foundation Learning Pod at NVCCF: K–12 tutoring and homework support managed by a licensed teacher with volunteer tutors.
- School Re-Entry Team: NVCCF’s Director of Education and team coordinate with CCSD staff to plan a child’s return, ensuring accommodations and a welcoming environment.
- Success in Education (Advocacy): Support for 504/IEP processes and teacher consultations so students have equal access to curriculum.
- Back to School in Style: For students returning after prolonged absence—new backpack, clothing gift card, supplies, and emotional support.
- C.A.P.S. (Courage, Achievement, Perseverance, Success): Annual recognition for students who demonstrate remarkable progress and grit, with scholarships awarded by the Brett Torino Foundation.
- Lean on Me: Kidz Supporting Kidz: School-based education (via life-size puppets) that builds empathy, inclusion, and anti-bullying awareness among classmates.

- Since 2008: Sole funding by the Brett Torino Foundation has sustained NVCCF Education Services.
- Annual Reach: ~a couple hundred students directly supported each year, with resources also available for siblings and children whose parents are in treatment.
- Continuity & Confidence: Students return to school with appropriate accommodations, stronger routines, and renewed academic momentum.
Providing continuity in education for children undergoing treatment is essential—not only for academic success, but for emotional well-being and long-term development.
Our Story
In 2008, NVCCF identified a critical gap: children in treatment were losing ground academically and socially. After designing a full-time, accredited K–12 program in partnership with CCSD, NVCCF turned to Brett Torino—who immediately committed to fund the effort. That commitment has continued every year, expanding services from an in-hospital classroom model to today’s Summerlin Hospital partnership plus a robust community-based Learning Pod at NVCCF.
Our second and final Shop with a Cop event at @walmart was the perfect way to close out this year’s program. 💙

We were honored to sponsor our first Shop With a Cop event of 2025 at @macys, one of the most meaningful programs we support each year. This two-part event serves hundreds of deserving children from some of the more vulnerable communities in Las Vegas, offering them a joyful holiday shopping experience and a chance to choose gifts they can truly call their own.
More importantly, Shop with a Cop helps children see police officers in a new light — as dedicated protectors, mentors, and compassionate members of their community. These shared moments help bridge perceptions and build trust, showing kids that officers are here for them, their families, and their future.

The Brett Torino Foundation was honored to welcome members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (METRO) and their families to Torino Ranch for the Wellness Bureau Retreat — a special day dedicated to restoring and supporting Southern Nevada’s law enforcement community.
Created and produced by Behind the Blue, the retreat offers a much-needed escape from the daily stress and trauma inherent in police work. Surrounded by the healing beauty of nature, participants spent the day relaxing, laughing, and reconnecting through shared experiences and meaningful moments of reflection.
A heartfelt thank-you to the incredible team at Behind the Blue and especially to Joe Hearns for his vision and leadership in making this retreat possible.
We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to give back to those who serve our community with such courage, compassion, and heart. 💙

This program provides vital continuity — offering tutoring, learning support, and advocacy so that no child falls behind while they heal. This expansion reflects the power of community partnerships and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to keep learning — no matter the challenges they face.
