Many of these kids are from the inner city and have never been in such a beautiful outdoor setting with huge trees, flowers, lakes, waterfalls, and streams.
The relationship between the ranch and the children is symbiotic. Torino Ranch is a place of wonder, a safe haven that provides a much-needed, emotional healing balm for the kids, who in return give enormous purpose to the ranch and nourish it with their love, joy, and gratitude.
These camps are available at no charge to families because of the generosity of the Brett Torino Foundation, the committed staff at the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation (NCCF), the Sunshine Nevada Organization (SNO), and their big-hearted sponsors and dedicated volunteers.
Camp Cartwheel is for critically and chronically ill children ages 5 to 17.
Camp Mend-a-Heart is for children ages 7-18 with heart conditions.
It’s hard for young people to grow if they allow challenging or tragic experiences to define them. The kids love camp because there they are no longer sick, underprivileged, or disadvantaged children. They are just children. We try to inspire them to realize their potential moving forward rather than living in the past.” – Kari Tillman, Founder of Sunshine Nevada Organization
The moment the kids step off the bus they are greeted like rock stars. Their excitement grows as they walk, or sometimes even dance their way under the long arch formed by the raised arms of loving volunteers.
While at Torino Ranch the kids enjoy the activities that typically take place at any camp. They laugh and play and forge new friendships. They reunite with old friends and hug their favorite counselors. Camp life is the best. It’s where they get to embrace the present and forget about all they’ve been through and the uncertain future they face.
